Anshen + Allen proposal, produced for the Bridge District in 1973

In January of 2005, four UC Berkeley engineering students took up the challenge of suicide barrier design. The team members were Danielle Hutchins, Robert Simpson, Ryan Stauffer and Douglas Wahl. They operated under the guidance of Engineering Professor Robert Bea and teaching assistant Kofi Inkabi. After a semester of research and investigation—and over forty preliminary sketches—the student team presented three complete designs. Their project took first place in the Engineering School competition and has been well received when on display.

Once the student designs were complete, PFNC contacted Marin digital photo artist Nick Fain to produce the photo realistic images presented here.

Local architects Anshen + Allen made one of the most popular proposals as part of a review for the Bridge District in the early 70’s. The design was originally published in the Chronicle, October 12, 1973 and received favorable reviews from columnist Herb Caen. In 2004 Marin artist Warren Lee updated the 1973 proposal by adding the pedestrian rail already installed on the Bridge.
